As the foundational link in the public safety chain, the Communications Center, a Division of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, plays a critical role in coordinating law enforcement, fire and medical responses to more than 93,000 citizens of Pottawattamie County. As the first, first responders, our Telecommunicators are tasked with the responsibility of providing excellence in service to our community through our encrypted radio system, after receiving calls for help via our 911 emergency and non-emergency telephone systems, at times exerting extraordinary effort in ensuring the safety and well-being of both our community members and our physical first responders.
Our Telecommunicators are responsible for dispatching law, fire and EMS services for the City of Council Bluffs, the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s office, fourteen volunteer fire departments, the Avoca Police Department, Carter Lake Police Department, and Pottawattamie County Conservation. Some incidents require our Telecommunicators to work intimately with surrounding states and counties to facilitate seamless communication among multiple agencies.
Services provided by our Administrative Office include processing Freedom of Information Act information requests (encompasses calls for service made to the Communications Division: both audio and dispatch information) and receiving and storing after-hours business emergency contact information. Requests for copies of police reports should be directed to the records division of the respective law enforcement agency in which the incident occurred.
